The Nasdaq dropped 800 points intraday this week and YouTube's finance brain trust can't agree on whether to panic or pop champagne. Tom Lee of Fundstrat is doing his signature contrarian shimmy, arguing the chip selloff is just institutional funds raising cash to fund their SpaceX (~$75B) allocation — not a structural breakdown. Meanwhile, Dan Niles is raising an eyebrow at SpaceX's ~90x revenue valuation and warning that OpenAI (~$850B) and Anthropic (~$900B) filing IPOs in the same breath could trigger passive index rebalancing that eats mega-cap tech alive.
The Andrei Jikh camp has a point too: when a stock gets added to the Nasdaq 100 — which has $600B+ in tracking products — automatic buying kicks in with zero discretion. That's a money printer for the new entrant and a slow bleed for whoever gets bumped. Empower's Marta Norton adds nuance worth stealing: memory semis look toppy, software has underperformed, and the Mag-5 hyperscalers (sans Tesla and Apple) still offer relative value inside the AI trade.
Add an Iranian drone allegedly taking out a US Apache over the Strait of Hormuz, Apple sliding 5%+ after a Siri reveal that landed like a wet napkin, and the Broadcom earnings that somehow disappointed despite being solid — and you've got a market that's not broken, just extremely confused about which story it's supposed to be in.
