The Iran-Israel conflict officially graduated from 'geopolitical risk' to 'call your broker' territory over the weekend. Israel struck an Iranian petrochemical facility, Iran fired ~30 missiles back, the Houthis slapped a ban on Israeli ships in the Red Sea, and Iran's Revolutionary Guards threatened to completely close the Strait of Hormuz — the artery through which roughly 20% of global oil flows. Casual Sunday stuff.
Energy markets are already flinching: oil surged over $4 on the initial strikes, whipsawed on sanction-relief rumors, and Bloomberg's desk is calling for further upside at Monday's open. Meanwhile, Asian equities got destroyed — South Korea's KOSPI dropped over 7%, Samsung and SK Hynix both fell 5%+, and the NASDAQ 100 cratered 4.7% on the cocktail of war risk, Broadcom's AI chip disappointment, and a jobs print (172K vs. 85K expected) that basically screams 'no Fed cuts anytime soon.' IATA is already forecasting airline industry profits to collapse 49% in 2026, from $45B to $23B. The IMF chief is on Bloomberg warning about persistent shocks. Treasury's Bessent says the US has 'plenty of funds for an Iran war.' Cool, cool, cool.
One thing's certain: if Hormuz closes, $USO and every refinery stock on the planet will have the best week of their lives — and everyone else will not.
